United States technology stocks fell sharply on Friday following disappointing quarterly earnings from Amazon and Intel, according to reports from The Information and TradingView. The Information reported that the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell by almost 3%, while the S&P 500 declined by nearly 2% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 1%. [1][3]
The market decline was driven by mounting investor concerns regarding artificial intelligence capital expenditures, Futuriom and TradingView reported. Hardware and optical component providers were particularly hard hit, with 24/7 Wall St. reporting that Applied Optoelectronics fell by 15%, Coherent declined by 13%, and both Lumentum and Marvell dropped by 10%. [2][3][4]
Concerns surrounding an artificial intelligence stock bubble have grown amid rapid investment across the sector. Investment in early artificial intelligence was funded mainly by operating cash flow, but the bond market came to dominate financing alongside $3 trillion in off-balance-sheet commitments. [6]
In short
- The Nasdaq Composite dropped almost 3% on Friday following disappointing results from Amazon and Intel.
- Shares of Applied Optoelectronics plunged 15% and Coherent fell 13% amid AI spending fears.
- Lumentum and Marvell both saw their stock prices sink by 10%.
