Reddit plans to move toward a logged-in-only experience, according to statements made by chief executive Steve Huffman and reported by Ars Technica and NewsCord. The move comes as Reddit recorded a meaningful drop in search traffic during the third quarter. Ars Technica and NewsCord both report that the platform has been testing login requirements in select non-United States markets and on desktop interfaces. [1][3]
Despite the drop in search referrals, Reddit increased its average daily active unique users by 12 percent year over year in the third quarter, Ars Technica reported. Huffman stated that logged-in users and mobile app users represent the platform's most valuable segment and are its primary focus. The Verge reported that Huffman also noted Google's AI Mode does not drive traffic to the platform. [1][2]
Reddit operates as a social news aggregator and forum platform where registered members submit content and vote on submissions, which are organized into user-created boards called subreddits. San Francisco-based Reddit Inc. completed an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in March 2024 at a valuation of 6.4 billion dollars, after being acquired by Condé Nast Publications in 2006. In 2025, the company generated 2.2 billion dollars in annual revenue. [4][5]
The platform has introduced several recent updates to reduce dependency on external search engine referrals and expand its logged-in audience. Ars Technica reported that earlier this year Reddit tested requiring users on mobile web browsers to access the service through its dedicated mobile apps, with plans to expand those restrictions. [1]
