Sony has re-released the vintage headphones originally paired with its 1979 Walkman TPS-L2 cassette player, Ars Technica, CNET, and TechPowerUp report. TechPowerUp and CNET identify the updated model as the MDR-3R USB-C wired headphones, while Quartz reports that the product is priced at 60 dollars. [1][2][3][5]
The retro headphones feature an adjustable gray plastic headband that extends using metal sliders and retains the signature circular orange ear cushions, according to Ars Technica. Ars Technica notes that the lightweight on-ear design presents a contrast to today's popular bulky headsets that feature wide headbands and large earcups. [1]
Japanese conglomerate Sony originally called the debut model the MDR-3L2, Ars Technica reports. The initial Walkman created a market for portable stereo audio and transformed personal music consumption, while USB-C connectors were first released in 2014 by the USB Implementers Forum to standardize device connectivity.
