A Russian military spacecraft maneuvered into extreme proximity with a commercial Earth-imaging satellite in low-Earth orbit, Ars Technica reported. The orbital intelligence company LeoLabs identified the Russian craft as Kosmos 2612 and the United States-operated imaging satellite as ICEYE-X36. [1]
LeoLabs stated that Kosmos 2612 performed a deliberate series of maneuvers to close in from hundreds of kilometers away toward ICEYE-X36, Ars Technica reported. According to LeoLabs, the Russian spacecraft maneuvered around the commercial satellite and remained nearby for an extended period before moving away. Ars Technica noted that this event represents the first known example of an unsanctioned rendezvous in low-Earth orbit. [1]
United States military officials and independent analysts have been tracking Kosmos 2612 since its launch in April on a S launcher, Ars Technica reported. [1]
