AI data centers use converted jet engines during grid power delays

Artificial intelligence data center operators are turning to repurposed aircraft engines to generate immediate power amid multiyear wait times for electrical grid connections.

Data center developers are utilizing discarded jet engines to produce electricity locally while waiting for electrical grid connections and new commercial turbines, TechCrunch reported. The New York Times initially reported that some artificial intelligence data center facilities are deploying these converted engines on-site. [1]

Engineers salvage the engines from retired aircraft and re-engineer them to burn natural gas instead of aviation fuel, according to TechCrunch. While these temporary units operate with lower efficiency and higher emissions than permanent infrastructure, operators are choosing them because they can be deployed quickly. [1]

Grid connection bottlenecks have already disrupted major infrastructure deals across the sector, as FTMQ Startups reported earlier. Microsoft recently terminated an anchor tenant contract for Nscale's planned 90-megawatt facility in Loughton, Essex, after UK Power Networks stated that grid power would be unavailable until the 2030s. The adoption of repurposed turbine hardware highlights how power availability constraints continue to lag behind the rapid capital deployment for artificial intelligence infrastructure, TechCrunch reported. [1]
