Latvia could introduce regulatory rules for tokenizing real-world assets in the first half of 2027, according to CoinDesk and Traders Union. Economics Minister Viktors Valainis stated that commercial property is a potential starting point for the new framework, while government bonds are also being considered. [1][3]
The Ministry of Economics is currently collaborating with the central bank, the Finance Ministry, and industry representatives to design the regulatory structure, CoinDesk reported. Valainis said that he expects the legislative work to remain a priority for the next administration as Latvia forms a new government. The primary goal of the initiative is to attract foreign investment into the country. [1]
An assessment related to the plan remains unfinished and overdue, CoinDesk reported. Additionally, no planned sovereign-bond issuance has been identified under the proposal so far. [1]
Latvia restored its sovereignty in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Baltic nation joined NATO and the European Union in 2004, and later adopted the euro as its national currency in 2014. [5]
