The Entertainment Software Association has requested that the United States Trade Representative add Chinese handheld manufacturer Anbernic to its list of notorious markets, Ars Technica and GameDev.net both reported. TorrentFreak first identified the submission made to the US government trade agency. [1][3]
The industry trade group claims that Anbernic facilitates substantial copyright piracy and trademark counterfeiting. Ars Technica reported that third-party sellers, rather than Anbernic itself, routinely sell the memory cards pre-loaded with game files for the retro emulation handhelds. [1]
Retro Handhelds also reported on the trade group targeting bootleg memory cards associated with the device maker. Chinese hardware manufacturers have built a distinct market niche producing Android-based handheld gaming devices designed for retro emulation and modern game streaming. [1][2]
Anbernic was founded in Shenzhen in 2017 by Shenzhen YangLiMing Electronic Technology Corporation. The company produces specialized portable gaming consoles that run retro emulation software. [4]
In short
- The ESA asked the USTR to include Anbernic on its Notorious Markets list.
- Ars Technica reported that third-party sellers, not Anbernic, routinely supply pre-loaded ROM SD cards.
- Anbernic was established in Shenzhen in 2017.
