Digital asset platform Blockchain.com has applied for regulatory approval to launch prediction markets and cryptocurrency derivatives trading in the United States. ReadWrite, Crowdfund Insider, Decrypt News, and Yahoo Finance all report that the company disclosed the move on October 9. The platform submitted filings to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the federal agency that oversees domestic futures and derivatives markets. [1][2][4][5]
According to ReadWrite and Crowdfund Insider, the applications cover both retail and institutional customers. Blockchain.com is seeking designated contract market status from the regulator. ReadWrite notes that obtaining this status would permit the business to operate a fully regulated futures exchange. [1][2]
Blockchain.com originally started as the first Bitcoin blockchain explorer in 2011. The company later expanded into providing cryptocurrency wallets, brokerage services, institutional lending, and market analytics. [7]
Neither a decision date nor a target launch timeline has been announced yet. ReadWrite reports that the filings have not been approved by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission at this stage. [1]
